Royal Doulton Atones for Failure

TAKAPUNA’S FINAL DAY

A SEVERE financial set-back must have been sustained by the Takapuna Jockey Club over its spring meeting last Friday and Saturday, for the totalisator returns for the two days were down no less than £.31,685, the decrease representing about 30 per cent, on the turnover recorded at the same meeting twelve months ago. The fixture itself was of a most enjoyable nature, marked by a general excellence in the management.

club was favoured with beautiful summer weather each day, and the big totalisator decrease must be put down to the cumulative effect of the taxation on racing (17 per cent, of the investments on each race are lost by investors), and the present economic situation. On Friday the investments showed a shrinkage ot £29,817|, but on Saturday the decrease was not more than £1,867£, but one point to be taken into consideration is that the same fixture 12 months ago was held on a Saturday and a Monday. Last Saturday’s return’s were £40,898, against £42,765£ on the concluding day last year, while for the two days the amount was £68,841i, compared with the decrease amounting to £31,685. Excellent Contests The large crowd present had no reason to cavil at the bill of fare provided, for the racing was again highclass, the finishes furnishing plenty of excitement, especially in the sprint in which four horses went over the line together. Royal Doulton made amends for her first day’s failure by winning easily the St. Andrew’s Handicap, two Ellerslie horses in Golden Wedding and Corinax chasing the Pukekohe representative home. Te Atiawa won the sprint from Tea Time and Macroom, while The Lamb staged a come-back in the concluding race by accounting for the favourite, White Wings, and Mithra. The course was again in fine order, making for fast times. Apprentice Rider Suspended The inquiry into the interference in the Alison Cup on Friday, as a result of which Le Choucas fell, was continued on Saturday morning, and as a result of the Judicial Committee’s investigations responsibility was fastened on the apprentice rider of Tinokoa. The report handed to the Press was as follows: “That in the opinion of the Judicial Committee the cause of the falling of Le Choucas in the Alison Cup was wholly due to an interference by Tinokoa, ridden by Connor, who had only ridden in one race previously. The committee recommends that Connor’s licence be re'stricted to his riding in apprentices’ races only for such term as may be imposed by the Licensing Committee of the conference, and that Connor be suspended from riding for remainder of meeting, under rule 2, part XXV, Rules of Racing.” The Takapuna Judicial Committee also inquired into an allegation of interference which High Finance wa stated to have suffered from Aussie at the start for the Cheltenham Handicap on Friday. After hearing evidence on the point the committee found that beyond a certain amount of squeezing at the start, there was no evidence to justify the complaint of Bryce, rider of High Finance. Notes on Saturday’s racing and full details of results are as follow: Vauxhall H andicap Jolly Money, a first-day winner, was made a better favourite than Taneriri for the Vauxhall Handicap, carrying £459 against the latter’s £419, while there was a drop to the next choice Froth blower, who was entrusted with £292. Master Lu began best and led out from Justify, Red Lion, Footpad, Jolly Money, Sir Mond and Just Nell. Along the back Footpad went to the front and made the pace from Red Lion. Jolly Money, Justify, Josie Melville. Sir Mond, Just Nell, Bombarder and Taneriri. Just Nell and Jolly Money were the first to turn for home, with Bombarder, Frothblower, Red Lion, Justify. Bannock and Taneriri Once in line for home Jolly Money went away from the field to win easily by three lengths from Bombarder Frothblower was two lengths away third followed by Just Nell, Bannock, Justify, Master Lu and Mon Star. Prince Val and Viburnum fell. High-weight Handicap Moy Hall £779, was a firm favourite for the Kawau High-Weight Handicap, Star of the East £506, being next selection, with fair support £364, for Wenday. Master Roley piloted the field from the barrier rise, and was attended past the stands by Lord Abbey, Charataine, Salamander, Royal Form, Blago and Wenday. Making for the back stretch Lord Abbey took up the leading position, Charataine also displacing Master Roley,' who came next, followed by Salamander, Star of the East, Royal Form and Wenday. Master Roley came again, crossing the top. where Glena Bay also put in a run and when the home turn was negotiated this pair was showing the way to Star of the East. Salamander, Rahepito and Roman Abbey. Glena Bay gave nothing a chance in the run to the box, and won by three and a-half lengths from the top weight, who finished strongly and beat Salamander by two lengths for second money. Farn&.on was fourth and then came Master Roley, Roman Abbey, Pouri, Star of the East and the favourite. Stanley Handicap Te Money £835 was first choice for the Stanley Handicap, but there was good backing for British King £716 and Leitrim £713, while Winsome Boy £493 was not neglected. Millais began smartest and led out Catapult, Te Money, Subdivision, Air King, and Leitrim. Subdivision rushed to the front along the back and had Air King. Catapult, Welcome Home, British King. Millais, Cybele and Te Money. When the straight was reached Subdivision was going well in front from British King, Air King, Catapult, Millais and Cybele, but inside the distance Air King swooped down on the leader and after a sharp tussle gained the verdict by a neck, with Catapult half a length away third, and Millais and Cybele almost together next. Then came Leitrim, Te Money, and Brilliant Light. Cautley Handicap The Cautl-ey Handicap proved a keen betting race, there being little between the elect quartette, while it also provided a stirring finish in which the fifth choice, Te Aitawa, gained a narrow verdict. Nancy Lee was favourite was £939, followed by Tea Time £862, Lady’s Boy £852, and Gold Money £829. Gold Money was slow to get going, while the favourite went off smartly, closely followed by Bally-

moy 11., Tea Time, Te Aitawa, High Finance, Macroom and Lady’s Boy. High Finance soon worked her way to the front and led along the back and across the top from Lady’s Boy, Tea Time, Te Aitawa, Nancy Lee, Macroom, Appellant, and Gold Money. The ieaders weer bunched at the home turn but Tea Time was actually in front when heads were, turned for the box, Macroom and Te Atiawa pressing the top-weight closely. Over the final leaders were bunched at the home turn Te Atiawa, who put in a great final burst on the outside, getting up to take the first place off Tea Time by a head, with Macroom a neck away third and the favourite well up fourth. High Finance, Lady’s Boy and Gold Money were the next to cross the line. St. Andrew’s Handicap Royal Doulton, who was strongly fancied for the Alison Cup yesterday, in which she failed to gain a place, made amends in the Handicap. The Pukekohe representative was was third choice on the machine, carrying £853, better backed ones being £853, better backed ones being the Prodice—Desert Glow bracket £1,005, and Le Choucas £971. Golden Wedding. who was only entrusted with £312, put up a good showing and paid a fine second dividend. King Emerald. The Lover and Prodice were slow to get moving, Le Choucas being the first to show out, closely attended by Golden Wedding, Tinokoa, Royal Doulton. Modest Boy and Desert Glow. There was no alteration till the back stretch was entered, where Tinokoa assumes command from Flying Juliet, Golden vVedding, Desert Glow, Le Choucas Royal Doulton and Branson. Crossing the top Royal Doulton moved forward and showed the way into the straight from Golden Wedding, Branson. Corinax. Flying Juliet, Le Choucas and Prodice. The leader was

full of running- and sailed home a comfortable winner by a length and a-half from Golden Wedding, with Corinax two lengths further back, followed by Prodice, Papatu, Tinokoa, Le Choucas, King Emerald and Branson. Rakino Handicap Awamutu £1,237, Fraser £999 and Carl Idem £BOB were the principal selections for the Rakino Handicap, which was confined to the juveniles, but they all went under to Cymon, who was not greatly fancied and returned a price which topped a score. The favourite began smartly and showed the way to Cymon, Fraser, Vali and Carl Idem. Crossing the top, Fraser ran to the lead, being attended closely by Awamutu and Cymon, with Praetor, Bennie and Carl Idem showing up prominently The three leaders turned into the straight practically on terms, and in a fine finish Cymon got home by less than a ’ength from the consistent Fraser, with Bennie a length away third. Awamutu was fourth, and then came Praetor, Carl Idem, Vali and Here Mint. Pupuke Handicap Storm Fiend £1159 was elected as first choice in the Pupuke Handicap, but there was good support for Maori Boy £745 and Mosque £6ll, Komak and Eager Rose also counting friends. Respirator and Komak were left at the start, Storm Fiend hitting the front and leading past the stand and out of the straight from Maori Boy, Eager Rose, Bizarro, Mosque and Miss Mercia. Down the back Maori Boy was taken to the front and he piloted the field across the top, his closest attendant being Eager Rose, Storm Fiend and Mosque. The latter improved his position and headed Maori Boy at the turn, with Eager Rose Brampton, War Officer and Komak who had made up a lot of ground, all in the picture. Mosque finished best to win by three parts of a length from Maori Boy, with Brampton a neck away third, followed by War Officer, Bhzarro^° Se * K ° mak ’ Doubl © Mint and Ngataringa Handicap Appellant and Leitrim, who had appeared earlier in the day, were withdi awn from the final event, leaving a field of 10. It provided an interesting with* 1 £ 11*469 Wlnss winding up u Seatown £1,206. and Hyde Park £1,115 also going over four figures, with The Lamb £758 and Mithra £630 at the head of the other quotations. The two on the inside runnmg, Mithra and White Wings, began ses!5 es !^ be * ng followed out of the tapes a T 11 0 Seatown, the last-named being last at the end of a furlong and a-half. Passing the five-furlong post White V\ mgs was making play from The Lamb. Mithra and Cynthia N. Crossthe top The Lamb gra.dually drew up to the favourite, and they were on terms at the home turn, Mithra. Cynthia N. and Seatown being their nearest attendants. The Lamb and w hite Wings had a good set-to in the run to the judge, with Mithra closing on them, and the trio passed the post in the order named, at half-length intervals. Seatown was a length and a-half away, fourth, and then came Cynthia N. and Hyde Park. The following are the results: VAUXHALL HANDICAP Of £250; 7 furlongs. 1— JOLLY MONEY (J. D.
