Heed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Sunday. A message from Santiago, Chile, says a disastrous earthquake occurred
on Saturday morning in Central Chile, about 200 miles south of that city. The towns of Talca and Chilian were the heaviest sufferers. Ten other places are known to have been seriously damaged, with some loss of life. Army officers flew over the stricken area, and upon their return suggested the dispatch of troops to
clear the debris and remove bodies from ruined buildings. The number of deaths reported reached 12-2 on Saturday night. Sixty others were reported dead unofficially, and 250 injured. Talca is in ruins. Forty of its inhabitans are dead and 200 injured. At Chilian there are 17 dead and 30 injured. Forty were killed and 100 injured at Barohona camp, at the Teniente mine of the Braden Copper Company, when the earthquake shock broke a reservoir, losing a torrent down the valley. Six are dead at Santa Cruz. Santiago and Valparaiso are only slightly damaged, but several people have been injured. There was a panic-stricken rush into the streets. Talca, a city of 35,827 people, is the capital of a province of the same name and stands on the river Claro. The population of Chilian is 30,109; Valparaiso 187,039, and Santiago, the capi--2656, The Sun.
