At Bow Church
DR. LANG MADE PRIMATE “No Popery” Agitator Scorned (Australian and. N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Friday. 'litlE final ceremony for the confirmation of the new Primate was held in Dick Whittington's church, Bow Church, Cheapside, before the court of seven bishops, presided over by the Bishop of London and in the presence of the Lord Mayor and Alderman. a
Archbishop Lang took the oath of allegiance, and the Court then considered objections from the Protestant Alliance, several clergy, also from Mr. J. Kensit. Most of the objections complained that Dr. Lang tolerated Romish practices and approved the use of the 1928 Prayer Book, despite its rejection by Parliament. Another said that Dr. Lang was not sympathetic toward the principles of the Reformation, and encourages mediaeval usages and doctrines. When objections had been heard Bishop Ingram announced that the Court would proceed with the confirmation. as no legitimate objections had been entered. The Court held the objections were irrelevant, as they only questioned Dr. Dang’s fiitness for office. Dr. Lang took the oath of allegiance to the King kneeling. He then stood up and pronounced the declaration against simony, assent to the 39 articles, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Church's doctrines. He then signed them using the official title, Cosmo Cantuar for the first time. Thereafter the Bishop of London formally inaugurated the Primate by announcing that the Court had confirmed the election. Archbishop Lang thus became St. Augustine’s 97th successor. He held up the Canterbury Cross in his left
hand, faced the congregation and pronounced his blessing.
Mr. Kensit, after the ceremony, distributed “No Popery” pamphlets in the street, but, in view of the annoyance given to recipients, the police intervened.
