ENERGETIC BIG PETER

BELL THAT WONT STOP RINGING The mid-day behaviour, since he was recently recast and rehuug, of Big Peter, York Minster’s eleven-ton bell, is attracting considerable attention, according to a London paper. Before he was dismantled it was humanly impossible to swing him into action, and the hour of noon had to be sounded with a lever hammer. Now, on his ball bearings, one man can swing him into action, aud so pleased is he with himself that he goes on booming forth his wonderfully mellow notes for a matter of five minutes, aud even more. If at any time it is desired to restrict him to his proper number, some system of braking will be necessary. So well balanced is the bell that an hour after he has been rung, although the bell itself may have ceased to swing to and fro. his 4cwt clapper may still be found to be swinging I within a few inches of the sides of the interior ot the bell.
