WHY TOMATOES SOMETIMES CRACK
After a dry spell we frequently see the tomatoes cracking, and often to such an extent that the fruit is quite unfit for use. This is not caused by any insect or fungoid trouble as many Imagine, but by an increased amount of water at, the roots, which causes such a sudden flush of sap that the skin cannot expand quickly enough and so cracks. The best way to avoid this trouble is to keep the roots -always sufficiently moist as to keep a sufficient flow of sap circulating through the fruit and plant. After a dry spell, doir’t pour on the water, but do it gradually; in fact, if you have allowed your plants to become dry at the roots, it is best to withhold water, and rely upon a dust mulch to keep them moving.
