Gate Theatre for Dublin

Ambitious Scheme by Well-Known Producers Dublin is to have its Gate Theatre, which will be run on the plan of the Gate Studio Theatre in London. The Peacock Theatre, constructed within the Abbey and seating 102 people, has been leased by a locally formed group of directors, all of whom have had considerable theatrical experience under well-known producers and managers. It is their intention to produce a new play every fortnight and the house will be open every night of the week except Thursday. The casts will be composed of Irish players who have already won reputations either on the amateur stage or with professional companies. The first production will be Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt.” This production will be followed by Eugene O’Neill’s “The Hairy Ape,” with Rutherford Mayne of the Ulster Players, who played the title role in “Emperor Jones” when that play was produced at the Abbey two seasons ago. Then will come in succession Georg Kaiser’s “Gas,” Sholom Asch’s “The God of Vengeance,” Simon Gantillon’s “Maya,” Elmer Rice’s “The Adding Machine” and Maeterlinck’s "Pelleas and Melisande.” These will take the theatre up to the New Year. In the spring it Is proposed to produce O’Neill’s “All God’s Chillun Got Wings,” Macliammoir’s “Diarmuid and Grania,” Elmer Greenfelder’s “Six Stokers Wh'j Owned the Bloomin’ Earth” and a modern version of the morality play “Everyman.” The enterprise is most ambitious, but those who have it in charge have been greatly encouraged by the large number of subscriptions which began to pour in upon the announcement of the project in the Press.
