Vertigern Carries Off Feilding Cup

STAKES EASY FOR PAGANELLI SOME MILD SURPRISES (Special to THE SUXJ PALMERSTON N., Friday. I The Feilding Jockey Club’s summer i meeting was opened to-day in line | weather, on a track that was hard and j fast. Since the last meeting of the club the course and stand accommodation have been greatly improved. The totalisator put through £ 20,357, against £25,777. u decrease of £3,420. Waituna Hardies All seven acceptors in the Waituna. | Hack Hurdles went to the post. The i Awapuni representatives, Sunart £361, and Elysianor £460, were outstanding favourites. When the field was sent away on its mission Klsyanor and Bonhouinie jumped to the front, but the latter lost ground at every fence, the order passing through the straight being Elysianor. Calithe, Grand National and Teucer. with ►Sunart, who had been allowed to drift, bringing up the rear. Pinna fell in negotiating the first fence in the straight. Half a mile from home Eonhi.mme was again in front, but was holding his position merely on sufferance, for crossing the top Elysianor and Sunart drew away, the favourite ] looking all over a winner. However, with the linal fence flattened, the run ! home descended into a sprint to the judge’s box, and Elysianor proved to I have too much pace for the topweight, winning by a good length, Bonhommo being six lengths back in third berth. Grand National was fourth. Bonhommo lost a lot of ground all through the race, and with the same horseman up might be beaten again. Sunart broke down, so that Elysianor looks to have another chance if he accepts. Aorangi Trial The Aorangi Trial Plate was run in divisions. was strongly fancied in the first division, and after lying handy a 11 the way won by a length from Elioit. St. Melba was third, three lengths away, and Grattan and Sky Point were next. Boundary won the second division practically all the way, finishing a length to the good of Ember alto, who was going on very nicely at the end, with Snowsho© and Broxt just behind the placed horses. Feilding Cup Shining Armour, who had gone lame, was the solo defection from the Cup, in which Vertigern was a firm favourite, although there was good money forthcoming for Catkin and Vivo. Vivo and Tcheka, from inside positions, were first out at the barrier rise, the pair being on terms as they passed the stands, with Arrow Lad and Blimp ahead of Catkin and Vertigern. They raced in that order along the back and to the half-mil© post, where the favourite mud© a movg, but it was not till approaching the straight entrance that Vertigern ran up to the leaders, Vivo and Tcheka being still in the van, with Arrow Lad handy. When asked the question, Vertigern strode to the front and hand no difficulty in stalling off a challenge from Arrow Lad, there being a two-length margin between them at the post. Tcheka hung on to take third honours two lengths away, with Novar ahead of Catkin and Vivo. Vertigern won very easily. Blimp could not hit out, nor could Royal Mint. Tcheka ran a fair race, and so did Arrow Lad. Feilding Stakes The Stakes was far from interesting. Paganelli went out very fast and was never headed, while Cimabue ran far below form. Paganelli was a firm favourite from the opening of the tote, Cimabue being next in demand, the field being restricted to a bare six runners as the result of the defection of The Kaider and Royal Duke. Paganclli was first out from Lysander and Cimabue, with Courtlike and Emotion following. Cimabue made a forward move crossing the top, but did not go on with it, the favourite being the lirst to turn for home ahead of The Hawk, laganelli was never troubled to win by three lengths, Lysander beating i ne Hawk in the run home by half a length. Courtlike was fourth, with Cimabue and Emotion whippers in. Hie last-named having been slow to move. Kowhai Hack The Kowhai Hack Handicap, which *_ a ® a good betting race, saw Home Made win with a line finishing run. Met el lus and Royal Acre carried the majority of the investments, there belt}B a marked drop to Tanagra, while . ultimate winner was at a royal price. Gold Bag and Acred acted as the pacemakers passing through the straight, from Royal Acre, Airforce, k OVena und Mettellus. There was little change going along the back, save that |_ovena had deposed Royal Acre, while Tanagra. Whisogne and Kalos had also improved their positions. At the straight entrance the leaders retired, kalos going to the front, and the Bonitorm gelding looked all over the winner until Home Made came from the rear m a long-sustained effort to gradually Kalos down and prevail by half a length. Acred was two lengths back m third place, being followed home by lanagra, Sovena, Gold Bag, Mettellus an 4 Royal Acre. Tanagra, Gold Bag and Kalos might better shortly, particularly Tanagra. Flying Handicap • Though the favourite. Vast Acre, won the Flying Handicap, she was lucky to do so. as Chelone was a good thing beaten. Chelone was fractious at the P°st, and when the tapes lifted was *low to begin, being tailed off in the first furlong. Banket jumped to the front from Dobbin and Helotis, with 'ast Acre ahead of Miss Pat and Calanmore. a nd the light-weight carried * lf T field along across the top and into the straight, where Vast Acre lodged a challenge. Chelone meantime having ”f en steadily making up bis way, although three furlongs from home lie appeared to be in an impossible position. Under pressure Banket responded. but swerved badly, and in the ■ast stride Vast Acre got up to win by a J lead> Chelone completing a brilliant effort to get to within three-parts of J length of Banket. Cullanmore was fourth, with Helotis next. Chelone looks like beating this lot 5 ' she meets them again. Fitzroy Hack Of the original field of 19 runners set •?own to compete in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap, Argue, Dry Area and Egeria

tailed to go to the post. Lady Quex j v. ound up a good favourite from Rame- I ses and Richfield, and then investments I dwindled away consideitibly. Inflame I was the early leader from Kameses, Callaput, Gold Dawn, Borsalene and Lady Quex, and the first-named held ins position right into the straight, where he was finished with. At the distance Borsaletne fell, bringing Briar Root down also, but while T. Webster, the rider of the former, escaped injury, T. Metcalfe, the rider of the latter, sustained a cut across the head and concussion, being removed to hospital. In the run to the post Gold Dawn and Kameses fought out the issue, the latter finishing the stronger, to snatch the honours from Gold Dawn by a head. Calapat was third, three lengths away, with Cold Air and Richfield next to finish, the last-named having been slow to move. Lady Quex was not seen at her best. Kiwitea Handicap King Midas was a good favourite for the lviwitea Handicap, which pro duced a great surprise. Iluanui and Vigilance were the leaders through the straight from Flying Shot, Manly, Merry Damon and Mountain Heath. Along the back Ruanui and Vigilance led from Flying Shot v and Merry Damon. Merry Damon joined Ruanui crossing the top, and the pair came into the straight together. Here Merry Damon came on alone, and won easily by a length from Mountain Heath, with Crazone half a length away third. Mountain Heath was a shade unlucky in the straight, but Merry Damon won easily, and paid a royal double figure dividend.
