FORGED REFERENCES

CHEMIST FOR SENTENCE MADE DESPERATE BY POVERTY Made desperate by poverty, Donald MacFarlane Fraser recently sought to ensure the success of his application for a position in a city firm by submitting two forged references. Fraser, a chemist, aged 26. appeared on summons at the Police Court this morning to answer a charge of forging the signature to a reference. Chief-Detective Hammond described thecas© as rather peculiar. Last September the proprietors of a city store had advertised for a man to take charge of their pharmaceutical department. Fraser had applied submitting two references which were afterwards found to be forged. In a statement to the police Fraser had admitted his Wilt explaining that he was a married man and “up against it.” Work was hard to get in the trade and he had taken what he now realised was a foolish course of action. Mr. Finlay intimating that he intended to plead guilty, one witness only was called. Fraser was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £SO.
