GIFT TO AUSTRALIA FROM LORD BIRKENHEAD'S SON (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. p.m. LONDON, Wed. Lord Birkenhead’s son, Viscount Furneaux, has presented to the Commonwealth of Australia a portrait of his maternal ancestor, Captain Furneaux, who was a colleague of Capl tain Cook. Interviewed by a representative of the Australian and New Zealand Press Association, Lord Birkenhead said: “I possess Northcote’s painting of Captain Furneaux. During the visit of the Australian Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Stanley M. Bruce, to England, it was agreed that my son would present a copy to the Commonwealth to hang in Parliament JTouse, Canberra.” The portrait is now in Australia House, from where it will be sent to Canberra. v The Furneaux Islands, a group in Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania, were discovered by Captain Furneaux in 1773. Furneaux Island, in the Pacific Ocean, also bears his name.
