Auckland Cup

AMATEURS’ IDEAS OF THE WEIGHTS The final lists of unofficial handicaps for the Auckland Cup are published to-day, and this last budget furnishes interesting reading. One contributor, an enthusiast from Whangarei, points out the result of the last Auckland Cup, as follows: Rapier. S.lO, Ist; Count Cavour, 9.5, 2nd; with Star Stranger, 9.6, out of a place. Basing his judgment on this, he remarks that “Rapier has proved himself to be one of the best stayers seen in this country for some time,” and places the son of Greyspear at the head of affairs with 9.6, and conceding Star Stranger 21b, Count Cavour being on the same mark as the latter, despite the fact that his second in the Auckland Cup last Boxing Bay was his last placed performance, other than a third among third-rate handicap performers recently. Another contributor places Rapier and Star Stranger on the same mark at the top, with 9.5. All the earlier lists made no doubt about placing Star Stranger at the top, and when the official handicaps are announced next Monday it may be found that after all there is practically nothing, between him and Rapier. A horse about whom there appeared

to be a wide margin was Oratrix, winner of the New Zealand Cup three weeks ago. She carried 7.1 on that occasion, and had the weights been framed after the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap (in which she ran second with 7.12) she would probably have been given a stone extra, perhaps a bit more. Now the “unofficial handicappers’ agree to disagree in her case, and she has been given anything from 7.6 to S.lO. In her case considerable interest will be taken in the weight

allocated by Mr. F. J. McManemin. The final contributions to-day have been sent in by the following:—A, from M.O’L. (Whangarei); B, from “Bridle” (Mount Albert); C, from “Glendowie” (Mount Eden; B from E.P. (Onehunga); E, from S.H. (Waipukurau}; and F from “Blow” (Hawera).
