MALING APPEAL FAILS
SYDNEY CIVIC SCANDAL ANOTHER MOVE PENDING i (United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Mcfciday. i The High Court to-day dismissed i the appeal of Silas Y. Maliug, formerly deputy-manager of the City Electricity Department, against the sentence of six months’ imprisonment and a fine of £SOO imposed upon him in July, when he was found guilty of j corruptly receiving £10,600. Tho ! money was paid in connection with a , power-house contract let to Babcock | and Wilcox, Limited, of London, by the late Sydney City Council. The Court's decision was based on the ground that the State Courts have no jurisdiction. Maling's counsel contended that the offence, if any. had been against the Federal Act covering secret commissions. This point having been disposed of by the judgment Maling's next j step is to appeal to the quarter ses- ] sions now pending.
