Von Scheer Dead

Commanded German Fleet at Jutland (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) ( United Service) Reed. 9.20 a.m. BERLIN, Monday. The death has occurred of Admiral Reinhold von Scheer, from heart failure. He commanded the German naval forces at the Jutland Battle. The British Admiralty has sent its condolence to the German naval authorities.

Reinhold von Scheer, regarded as one of the most energetic and able officers in the German Navy, was commanding- a battle-squadron at Kiel when the Great War broke out, and continued to hold that position until the end of 1915, when he became Commander-in-Chief of the High Seas Fleet. He commanded the German naval forces, with Hipper as second in command. Scheer’s conduct of the operations at Jutland was the subject of much criticism. He gave his own account of the battle in “Germany’s High Seas Fleet in the World War,” published in 1920.
