CARLTON CROQUET CLUB
An “At Home” was given by the president of the Carlton Croquet Club, Mrs. Hamilton, at the club’s grounds at Epsom last Friday afternoon for the purpose of welcoming home three of the club’s members who had recently returned from overseas. They were Mrs. G. Campbell, Mrs. W. Brown and Mrs. Sands. A hearty welcome was extended to them by the president on behalf of the club. The president of the Auckland Croquet Association. Mrs. Schnauer, also attended. In addition to offering congratulations to the returned members, Mrs. Schnauer referred to the successful outcome of the efforts of Carlton’s officers and members in consolidating their financial position since acquiring the property for their new home at Epsom. By hard work and good management, happily backed up by the bond of a common interest, the members now possessed a home of which they could be proud. The lawns were in splendid playing order. Afternoon tea was provided by the president. During the afternoon a “long shot” competition was held, and created much interest and amusement, eventually being won by Mrs. Kirk (A grade) and B grade by Mrs. Gardiner. Two sessions of progressive croquet were also carried out, the winners being Mrs. Clarkson and Mrs. Schnauer (A), and Mrs. Somerville and Mrs. Short (B). Special thanks were accorded the club’s guests for articles presented as gifts on their return from abroad.
