FRANKLIN INTERESTS
A meeting of the executive of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on Saturday evening, Mr. E. Allen presiding. The Pakuranga Hunt Club advised that owing to adverse seasons it was compelled to reduce its donation to £l2 12s. It was decided to reduce prize money allotted to hunt club classes on a pro rata basis. Thanks were accorded the Auckland Friesian Breeders’ Association, Mr. and Mrs. J. Batty (Karaka), Messrs. Snedden and Armiger (Ramarama). and Mr. W. J. Brooks (Drury) for donations of special prizes. Judges were appointed for the following classes for the summer show subject to their acceptance:—Beef and fat stock, Mr. R. Madill (Hamilton): milking- Shorthorns, Mr. E. Wall (Hastings); Friesians, Air. E. C. Banks (Matamata); 'Jerseys, Mr. P. J. Peterson (Brixton, Taranaki); grade Jerseys, Mr. T. Pollock (Pukekohe Hill); dairy classes, Mr. John Massey (Hautapu); sheep, Mr. C. H. Williams (Gisborne); pigs, Mr. A. W. Green (Hamilton). The horse committee was recommended to include classes such as musical chairs, "Victoria Cross, Lloyd Lindsay and tentpegging in the equestrian events. * * The Queen Carnival promoted by the St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild to raise funds for church works was concluded on Friday evening with the crowning ceremony. The final figures were: Marjorie Treanor (Hill queen), 10,596 votes; Audrey Morrison (Central), 5,661; Esme Munro (North), 3,343. The ceremony was carried out in a very capable manner, and each little queen had her attendants, pages and train-bearers. It is expected that the effort will be responsible for a good sum being raised. * * * A sum of £6OO was derived from the Tuakau queen carnival contest in aid of funds for the bowling, tennis, recreation and football clubs. The effort was finalised on Friday evening, when the coronation ceremony took place. Voting was as follow:—Miss Ina Deeble (bowlers’ candidate), 16,076 votes: Miss Gladys Strahan (tennis queen). 15,910; and Miss Alice Maiden (recreation and football queen), 13,669. * * =!« The Pukekohe Borough Council met ie.st evening:, the Mayor, Mr. J. Routly, presiding. Intimation, was received from the Main Highways Board that the subsidy for maintenance of main highways had been increased from 30s for £1 to £2 for £l. It was decided to draw the Highway Board’s attention to the inadequacy of the subsidy, even after allowing for the increase. With a view of safeguarding the Post and Telegraph Department’s underground telephone system it was agreed to cooperate with the Department, but to take no responsibility in the event of cables being damaged by contractors. Necessary repairs to the Cape Hill to Paerata Road are to be effected as soon as convenient for the staff. Repair work was also authorised in Upper Queen Street. The lighting committee and the Mayor are to inspect the street lights, with a view of having additional lights installed and some eliminated. The health inspector, Mr. T. C. Thompson, presented a comprehensive report dealing with the mosquito nuisance which he considered was becoming worse. He recommended the council to compel property owners concerned to cut channel drains through swampy areas, and to serve notice on the trustees of the estate adjoining the Premier Hall, to cut back some very large hedges over drains. The inspector suggested that places such as these were veritable breeding-grounds for these pests. Subject to the council possessing the power, the inspector’s recommendation Is to be carried out.
