NO DEMAND FOR WETHERS In the frozen meat market in London there is practically no demand for wethers, according to advice received by the Bank of New Zealand from its London office at the close of last week’s business. The market for ewes is dull, the report adds. Lamb is fairly well supplied and moderate business has been done. The beef market is firm. Continued bad weather has hampered the trade generally. Quotations: Wethers, light, 6d to 7d a lb.; heavy, 5d to 6d a lb.; ewes, 4d to 5d a lb. Lambs, twos, 93d to lO&d a lb.; eights, 93d to lOd a lb.; fours, 9d to 9£d a lb.; seconds, BJd to Bid a lb. Ox hinds, a lb.; seconds, Btd to Bid a lb. Ox hinds, 4id to 4gd a lb; fores, 33d to 4d a lb.. Cow hinds, 4ld to 4Jd a lb; fores, 3id to 3£d a lb. The market is firm for butter and quiet for cheese. The Taranaki Oilfields, Ltd., reports:— Gisborne No. 2 well: Drilled to 1,930 feet in shale, 10-inch diameter casing to 1,896 feet. MINING NEWS LUCKY SHOT.—The manager reports: Tn the drive south of No. 1 winze a rise has been started on the main reef to prove the extent of the rich shoot of ore at this level. The rise is up 3ft. and the reef is 2ft. 6in. wide, this®carrying splendid mineral indication and showing gold freely in the ore broken out. On several occasions picked stone has been secured. The low level has been cleaned out for a distance of 600 ft. Another 210 ft. will take us in to the face. ALBURN lA —The manager reports: The drive south on the cross leader from the north end of the drive north on the hangingwall of the Orlando reef has been extended 6ft.. a total of 20ft. The reef here averages 12in. wide, but is split into three branches. The quartz broken from here carries nice mineral blend and silica. The country rock on both walls is still of a good class for making gold. The rise on the cross leader, from the north end of the drive north on the hangingwall of tbe Orlando reef has been risen sft., a total of 10ft. high by 12ft. in length. The reef here averages 18in. wide and the footwall portion still shows strong dabs of gold when broken down. The hangingwall portion is still mixed with mullock. The rise on the dropper off Sons of Freedom reef has been risen sft., a total of S6ft. The reef here averages lOin. wide and carries nice mineral and silica. At> this point I have opened out and am putting in the drive timbers so as to start an intermediate level. After driving a few feet north from the rise a start will be made to crosscut east to cut Downs’s leader, also a crosscut west to cut the main Sons of Freedom reef.
