MR. C. W. EYRE A veteran of the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny, Mr. Charles William Eyre, died at Tauranga, aged 94 years. After receiving his discharge in England he came to New Zealand 45 years ago, and settled in the Gate Pa district, where he had since re. sided. His wife died in March last, and there is no family. The funeral takes place at the military cemetery to-day. MR. W. R. KETTLE GREYMOUTH. To-day. Mr. William Robert Kettle died at Greymouth this morning at the age of Deceased was born in London and arrived with his parents at Greymouth in 1874. He subsequently started business as a general merchant and was, during his career, Mayor, chairman of the Harbour Board, of the Grey Education Board and of the Hospital Board, president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of numerous local bodies and societies. He was prominent in the district in commercial concerns. Mr. Kettle was a member of the racing and trotting clubs, a Freemason and a Druid, and was chairman of the Greymouth Evening Star Company. During the war Mr. Kettle was a prominent member of the Grey Patriotic Society. 1-Ie visited Honolulu for the Press Congress in 1923. This year he celebrated his golden Avedding. He is survived by a AvidoAv, two daughters and one son.—P.A. MRS. EMMA VERCOE Mrs. Emma Vercoe, who died at Birkenhead yesterday at the age of 85 years, Avas well known in rhe Helensville district. Her husband, the late Mr. Richard James Vercoe, was a farmer there. Mr. Vercoe Avas born at sea in 1842, and came to Auckland when five years old. Ho was a member of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, and at the time of his death at Grey Lynn five years ago was the oldest member of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge. Mrs. Vercoe was the third daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Henwood, of Mangere. She was born on March 23, 1843, at St. Teath, Cornwall, England. In 1857 she came to Auckland in the ship Joseph Fletcher. She is survived by a family of nine. There are 38 grandchildren, and IS great-grandchildren. The sons are: Mr. James Vercoe, of Te Pua; Mr. Richard Vercoe, of Birkenhead; Mr. Charles Vercoe, of Mount Eden; and Mr. John Vercoe, of Helensville. The daughters are: Mrs. Frederick Walker, of Wanganui Avenue, Herne Bay; Mrs. W. R. Entwistle, of Marama Terrace, Birkenhead: Mrs. Harry Mclntosh, of Takanini; Mrs. A. Moncur, of Great South Road; and Mrs. J. Bradley, of HelensA'ille. MRS. ELIZABETH CARNACHAN Mrs. Elizabeth Carnachan, an early settler of the Waikato, has died, at the age of 93. Born at Kilpatrick, Scotland, Mrs. Carnachan came to New Zealand in 1864 in the ship Helen Lee. She had married Mr. David Carnachan, Avho Avas attached to the 79 th Highlanders, in Scotland. They settled Avitli their family at Cambridge. On the outbreak of the Maori War in the Waikato, Mr. Carnachan joined the militia, and served throughout the campaign. It Avas during this time that Mrs. Carnachan won admiration for her bravery and fortitude. She was one of the few white women who did not seek the refuge of barracks, and, seemingly without fear, remained alone with her family in her house. Apparently the Maoris also respected this bra/very. for the Carnachan homestead remained untouched. After the war Mr. Carnachan established a store, while Mrs. Carnachan deA’Oted her spare time to nursing. About 30 years ago, Mr. Carnachan died. Five years later Mrs. Carnachan settled in the One Tree Hill district. Of 12 children, six sons j nd three daughters are Irving. There are over 50 grandchildren, 20 great-grand-children, and one great-great-grand-child. The funeral took place at Cambridge.
