FLAXMILLERS’ AWARD
FLOATING BASIS OF WAGES Press Association PALMERSTON N., Friday. Judgment in the Arbitration Court on questions affecting the flax industry has been received by the office of the Department of Labour. An application was made by the employers for a reduction of 10 per cent, in the wages of workers in the Manawatu district, and another for a rate for workers on automatic scutching machines, as wages were not at first fixed on the state of prosperity of the industry. The employers' application was refused. The court favours a sliding scale, but as the employers oppose it, the court thinks it should be adopted only with the consent of the parties concerned. The court has prepared a long subclause for the consideration of the parties to provide a base on which wages can be regulated, providing for the increase or decrease of wages according as the base rises or falls. Regarding automatic scutchers, the clause oi’ the award was amended to provide for piece and time rates.
