Fire-Bells at Wedding!
Smithy and Ulm were There When Litchfield was Married
“A Few Spots at the Wentworth ”
When Mr. Litchfield, navigator of the Tasman flight, and his beautiful bride, Miss Rena Holdsworth, decided upon a quiet wedding, with no formal invitations, it was inevitable that the ceremony should be marked by a few unexpected incidents that often go hand in hand with such romances. Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith, rosy with sunburn, dashed back with Flight-Lieutenant Ulm by airplane from Young, and had time only to brush his clothes and. don a clean collar. In his flying uniform he performed the duties of best . lan with first class honours, buoyed up by Ulm, who came without his hat, having left it in his excitement at the Richmond airdrome He was consoled by the fact, however, that the bridegroom also forgot his hat when leaving the church. Mr. Maidment was also away when he heard of the wedding, and came down from Canberra. Fire Bells After the ceremony, performed by I
the Rev. Russell at the altar of St. Jaynes’s Church, which was massed with lily of the valley, roses, and carnations, the bride and bridegroom entered the vestry just as the bells from a passing fire engine rang out. When they reappeared, a little golden-haired child, Janette Moulder, ran out into the aisle and kissed them both. Platinum Ring The bride, who is the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Holdsworth, wore a tiered frock of beige lace, with a small, tightly-fitting ciel blue straw hat, and blue kid shoes. Her ring was of carved platinum, and her sheaf of blue delphiniums almost reached the ground. Mrs. F. Marr, wearing a black and floral georgette frock," with a black balm hat, and carrying a magnificent bouquet of golden roses, was matron of honour. There was no reception, but just a “few spots at the Wentworth,” as I “Smithy” called it.
