CARD PARTY TROPHIES PRESENTED TO ELLERSLIE BOWLERS The Ellerslie bowlers held a progressive 600 evening on Thursday as a wind up to their many social functions held daring the winter months. The card winners were Mrs. Toy and Mr. H. McKenzie. A feature of the evening was the presentation of trophies by the president, Mr. Toy, to the winning bowlers for the 1927-28 season. Mr. J. Crosher, as champion, won the silver cup and prize; Mr. C. Lynch (runner-up), Mr. J. McMieee (lead in handicap), Mr. T.. Dickson (skip), Mr. J. Christmas (lead percentage fours), Mr. R. WOMEN’S GOLF AUCKLAND CLUB The Auckland Ladies’ Golf Club closed its season yesterday, a foursome being won by Misses N. Colbeck and M. Ferguson. At the annual meeting in the afternoon, the following officers were elected:—President, Mrs. T. 8. Culling; vice-presidents, Mrs! P. H. Upton and Mrs. A. M. Ferguson; captain. Miss E. M. Upton; committee. Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Hodges, Miss F. Pathbone and Miss G. Buddie; secretary, Miss N. MacCormiek. Mrs. P. Upton, the retiring president, presented the season’s prizes. Occasion was taken to present Miss J. Reid, the retiring captain, with a clock. The members were her guests at afternoon tea.

LABOUR WOMEN MEET

A social evening was held by the Auckland Women’s Branch of the Labour Party in the club room. Tabernacle Buildings, on November 21. Mrs. Soljak presided over a good attendance of members , and friends. It was decided to start a Dickens reading circle, to be expanded later into a -dramatic club should sufficient talent be forthcoming among the vounger members. Mr. Vivian, who is the convener, outlined the plan proposed, and 12 members enrolled. Musical items were given by Mr. Carr, and refreshments were served by the ladies.

Sunny Gardens Delight Guests

At-Home at Takapuna The fine weather yesterday afternoon was ideal for the “At Home” given by Mrs. W. R. "Wilson, at “St. Leonards,” Takapuna. The guests spent most of the afternoon in the gardens, where they were able to enjoy the beauty of the view out over the harbour, or to sit and listen to the band playing on the terrace. A number of the commissioners attending the Girl Guide Conference were guests of honour. Some of the guests played tennis or strolled down the hill to the beach, while others walked in the gardens, admiring the flowers and enjoying the sunshine. In the house, where tea was served, bowls of flowers decorated all the rooms, and the dining room was arranged with stocks and roses in varying shades of pink. Mrs. Wilson was wearing a charming gown of gentian blue georgette, patterned in bronze tonings, to receive her guests. Her hat was of wide-brimmed shape in a matching blue visca straw. Assisting her were:— Mrs. J. Macky, whose frock was of finely-tucked ficelle-tinted georgette, worn with a bangkok hat. Miss B. Wilson, who wore a frock of fine green linen, with self-coloured embroideries, and a. black picture hat. E. McMillan, M.P. The church people in Te Aroha two years ago built their new church at a cost of about £3,000. Now only £BOO remains to be paid, and this it is hoped will be liquidated at the conclusion of the bazaar. As soon as the bazaar was opened brisk trade began at all the gay stalls, which were draped with red, white and blue. The stalls and stall holders were:—Produce, Mesdames Spencer, Strange, Hines and Miss Mace; cake and Christmas stall, Mesdames Wild and Hunt; children’s stall, Mesdames Charters and Robinson; plain goods stall, Mesdames Devey, Rundell, Williams and Tapp; fancy goods stall, Mesdames Conolly, Wright and Merrington; Christmas gifts, Mesdames Cornish, Puckridge, Hardman, F. Bliss and Miss Maingay; ice-creams, Mr. F. Bliss; sweets, Misses Lorie, Gilchrist and Ray, together with the members of the Girls’ Club; tea, Mrs. Heathcote. Such attractions as tugs-of-war were in the capable hands of Messrs. Hardman and Tibbitt.
