CAR-BURNING ‘INDUSTRY’
HIGHER PREMIUMS THE CURE VIEWS OF INSURANCE DIRECTOR (Special to THE SUN) DUNEDIN, Friday. “The wilful burning of motorcars seems to have developed into a regular industry,” said Mr. John Moloney, chairman of directors of the National Insurance Company, in his address to the annual meeting of shareholders to-day. Commenting on the enormous fire waste in the Dominion, Mr. Moloney remarked that it was not uncommon for unscrupulous people to turn combustible assets into money through the most convenient medium, a quickly convertible fire insurance policy. In this country, where fire insurance rates are so low, over-insurance is not unknown. Only by increasing the premiums and by holding inquests concerning all fires, can this criminal and selfish form of destruction be checked. Although it is the insurance companies that are called on to pay the losses, the Government should inquire into such an economic loss to the community and a waste of wealth, he added.
