Field Events at Next Athletic Champs Necessity of Coaching (By VETERAN) Sadly missing from the ranks of j Auckland’s athletes to-day arc exponents of the various field events who are capable of recording good distances. There are no Madills, Wallaces, Skinners or O’Connors to delight the Domain gatherings as of old. However, the right material offers and with a little coaching, no doubt, champions worthy of the name could soon be produced. The shot-putt and discus-throw championships this year should provide a treat to onlookers since four men of equal merit will contest the former event and five the latter. D. Grant is Auckland’s present champion with the 161 b shot, but owing to an accident last winter he has not appeared in active competition this season. But it is quite on the cards that he will be on hand at the proper time to defend his championship. Fit and well he Is very capable and will take a deal of defeating. R,. E. Brocas’s form offers the suggestion that he is going to worry the champion. His great height and commanding reach should take him far in this branch of the field games. AN OLD-TIMER O. Dunlop has science written all over his putting but lacks avoirdupois. In open competition fce has reached 37ft and over, a distance that has won
