KING'S ILLNESS
PERSISTENT FEVER ALL DAY SLIGHTLY WORSE The King, who is suffering from a cold, is, according to late reports, slightly worse. British Official Wireless Reed. 10.15 a.m. RUGBY, Thursday. The King had a busy day yesterday, and received many visitors at Buckingham Palace, including the Ministers of Rumania, Iraq and Haiti. He is expected to make a complete recovery within a few days, and the Issue of the bulletin yesterday was largely due to the necessary cancellation of his engagements to-day. In company with the Queen he was to have opened the Spitalfields Market extension, and later the old Lincoln’s Inn Hall, which has been restored. These functions were performed by the Queen alone. A later Australian and New Zealand Press Association-United Service message, however, says the court physicians signed a bulletin that his Majesty was slightly worse. He passed a rather restless day, owing to the persistence of fever, and there is some congestion in one lung. The King desires personally to confer the Air Force Cross on Mr. Bert Hinkler. Accordingly, the presentation has been deferred. A leading physician, discussing the latest bulletin, said: “There is nothing in the King’s condition to cause grave anxiety, beyond what we naturally feel for a beloved monarch. Probably it will be ten days before he is sufficiently well to leave his bed. It will take about a week for the fever to subside.” Lord and Lady Athlone, who are returning to Africa to-morrow, dined with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. The Duke of York, who accompanied the Queen to Spitalfields, returned to-night to Naseby Hall, Northants, where the Duchess is staying.
