The local trade union secretary had the greatest difficulty in preventing 1,200 dockers at Manchester from ceasing work and marching to the Town Hall to protest against the Mayor of Salford’s statement at a dinner that dockers took up witli lasses and lived in a single room, producing a papulation which was a menace to the town and leaving them chargeable on the rates. The secretary declared that it was a malicious attack on the morals of the dockers and their wives. He added: "I feel like handing him over to the women.” The Blayor privately received a deputation of protesting dockers. He refused to apologise, however, saying he hrid not meant all the dockers.
