LABOUR COMMONERS FLOUT THEIR CHIEF
CLYDESIDE MEN PRECIPITATE SPLIT IN PARTY VOTE (Australian and y.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Heed. 10 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. A significant indication of internal dissensions in the Labour Party was visible in the House of Commons last night, when the Socialist Clydesiders challenged a Government motion to regularise pensions in the diplomatic service. Mr. David Kirkwood (Dumbarton) objected to pensions at the age of 60, saying no one should get more than £4OO a year. The leader of the party, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, strongly supported the Government, urging that State servants must be well paid. There had been too much leakage from the Civil Service into private industry recently. Mr. G. Buchanan, Mr. J. Batey, Mr. J. Maxton and others of the left wing flouted Mr. MacDonald and Mr. J. H. Thomas, who also supported the Government. After heated exchanges between the Socialist front and back benches, the Clydesiders forced a division. The Government's motion was carried, 33 Labourites going to no lobby.
