DEVONPORT’S PROGRESS
DECISIONS OF COUNCIL The Devonport Borough Council is to consider a scheme submitted by its engineer to dispose of the sewage at Narrow Neck through a septic tank, so that the rapidly increasing outflow shall not interfere with the beach. The engineer has been authorised to take levels and obtain data on ocean currents. This was decided at last evening’s meeting of the council. The Melrose Park committee reported that a project to form a clay court for tennis on the newly formed park, which four months ago was ; a mangrove swamp, had been taken up well, and the council was asked to roll the ground in readiness. For the benefit of bathers and boatmen, steps are to be made leading down to the water at internals along the new wall on Queen’s Parade. It was reported that the new weedscorching plant is expected to arrive shortly. The town clerk reported that to date the amount spent in unemployment relief had been £SBI on Melrose Park, £312 from the Watson bequest on King Edward Parade works, £325 at Stanley Park. Members decided to consider a scheme of superannuation in conjunction with the National Provident Fund for aged employees of the council. ' The Waitemata Power Board declined to exempt the council from peak load charges that it might incur by reason of starting up pumps at the lake to meet a call from the Takapuna Brigade. It was decided that Takapuna be asked to indemnify Devonport against possible extra charges. Plans for enlarging the Victoria Theatre were sanctioned, subject to widening the exits from 10 to 14 feet and adjusting the outlet passages to correspond. The new building will provide seating for 1,000 people, and have a stage suitable for presenting drama and plays.
