TO END RIVALRY
CO-ORDINATION OF ROAD AND RAIL TOURIST LEAGUE’S IDEA The co-ordination of rail and motor transport and the protection of motor services from unnecessary and uneconomical competition would be advantages gained by the establishment o£ a National Transport Board. This is the contention put forward by the New Zealand Tourist League in its latest bulletin. It is held that if protection were afforded service-car proprietors who were serving the public well, a higher standard of service could be demanded and the railways would be safeguarded against unfair competition. The suggestion is not limited to one organisation for the whole Dominion, and it is held that it might be desirable to have one or more boards in each island. It is suggested the board should consist of two representatives of the motor interests and one each from the railways, the Government Tourist Department and the Highways Board. Four areas would be constituted — Auckland, Taranaki and Gisborne being in one group, Wanganui, Hawke’s Lay, Wairarapa and Wellington in another, Marlborough. Nelson and Westland formerly the first of the South Island districts, and Canterbury, Otago and Southland the other. The boards would have the power of issuing licences and ruling how many cars would run on particular routes. They would approve the time-tables and fares and oversee the type of car and driver. Speeds and weights on different sections of the routes and adequate insurance cover policies would be insisted upon.
