TE PUKE FLOWER SHOW AND GALA The 16th annual flower show was held j at Te Puke in McDowell’s Hall on Tu«_-s- ! day afternoon. The show proved most j successful, a special feature bedng the ; roses and the courts. The Country Court ; was most striking, being a representation j of a clock tower in flowers. Many j people thought the • clock” a real one. ; The Te Puke Court gained the prize. This j court represented a windmill. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. Principal prize-winners were : Champion Rose—Mrs. Reynolds. Bunch Sweet Peas —British Queen: Mrs. Dudley Vercoe. Six Distinct Varieties of Roses —Cup: Mrs. Wilson. Bruce Beale Bowl, for most points in decorated classes —Mrs. Johnston. Hay and Sons’ trophy, for most points in cut flowers —Mr. Keely (Whakatane). Te Puke’s gala week is causing a great influx of country visitors to the town. The shops are gay with decorations and lend a festive air to the town. At 3 p.m. on Tuesday about 100 balloons were allowed to float down front the Bank of New Zealand roof. Mr. Frank Chapman was lucky enough to catch the balloon with a prize ticket on it, the prize being a cut-glass salad dish presented by the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Gibbings. KING COUNTRY NEWS The Taumarunui Borougn Council resolved at its meeting on Tuesday evening to unite with other local bodies in a big public farewell to Mr. P. Heller, resident Public Works engineer, who has been in charge of the local Public Works office for many years Mr. Kollir has ;>een transferred to Stratford. * * * Flying from Timaru, birds belonging to the Manunui Pigeon Club registered as follows: J. Langwell’s Walhoon, 1 ; D. Andrew’s Riverblue, 2 ; D. Wilson’s Star Salute, 3. Langwell’s entrant was the only bii'd to home in race time. The club’s next race will he the north yearling championship from Wellsford. * * * Mr. A. J. Arthur, late of the railway staff at Taihape, has taken up his duties as stationmaster at Taumarunui, in place of Mr. Guthrie, transferred. *= * * Mr* E. Murrow presided over the annual smoke concert and trophies presentation of the Taumarunui Railway Football Club. Mr. W. Hodges presented the trophies, and in handing the Mullins and Bull Cup to Mr. T. Lee, for the Taumarunui railway team, remarked that the trophy had been keenly contested for between the winners, Te Kuiti, Ohakune and Taihape Clubs. The Maurer and Simons Cup was handed to Mr. Falwasser, for the traffic team. Mr. D M. Simmons's gold medal for most improved player was awarded to Mr. C. Green. The usual toasts and a bright musical programme rounded out a pleasant evening. ROTORUA NOTES The road to the cemetery, known as Forestry Avenue, has been regraded and formed. The work of rolling, consolidating and clearing out old water-tables is now being completed. A footpath, bordered by an avenue of limes, has been constructed, and when completed will be a great improvement to the borough. It will make the road to the cemetery better for pedestrians. The cemetery is receiving attention, and the main entrance and roadway has been graded and rolled. Candidates, as follow, have just completed their sittings in St. John’s Hall, under the supervision of Mrs. A. C. Randerson, for the annual university examinations:—Bachelor of Arts, 7; law, 1: banking diploma, 3; accountancy, professional and Bachelor of Commerce, 7. The Education Department’s examination commenced on Tuesday and extends to November 30. There are 39 candidates sitting for senior scholarships, junior national scholarships, Public Service entrance and intermediate examinations. * * * An interesting musical demonstration was given by Air. J. Davies at the Grand Theatre on Monday evening. Music from a gramophone record in front of the theatre was amplified and transmitted by wire to a loud-speaker on the stage. After the Rotary luncheon on Monday, Mr. J. N. Roberts congratulated one of the members, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, on having been elected to represent the constituency in Parliament. Air. Clinkard suitably replied. * * * Air. P. A. L. Basham has presented a handsome silver cup to the Rotorua Basketball Association for competition among the various clubs. Mr. D. L. Dawson, director of townplanning, went to Rotorua to-day to meet members of the Borough Council in connection with town-planning in Rotorua, and the lay-out of Alarinc Parade.

FRANKLIN INTERESTS A meeting of the executive, of the Franklin agency of the Auckland Automobile Association was held at Pukekohc on Tuesday evening, Air. G. T. Proudu presiding. The secretary, Air.
