SUCCESSFUL RECITAL
MR. BARRY CONEY’S PUPILS A recital of vocal and pianoforte music by Mr. Barry Coney and hh students attracted a large audience a: the Lewis Eady Hall last evening. The programme contributed by the student? was of a widely varied nature and adequately represented the sylabtfs from junior to the most advanced grades. Twelve items were provided in each half, but thanks to the wise provision which curtailed encores, despite demand, the programme was not unduly longOn the contrary the rapid succession of items made for a very enjoyable entertainment. Even in the more simple numbers of the less advanced vocal pupils pleasing restraint was always in evidence. H in some instances, as is only to be expected, there is need for further development, it was pleasing to note thai artistry was always given preference to the strained effects often attempted. Forcing was almost entirely absent The work of the pianoforte student? was of a generally high standard, and some very pleasing performances * r erv heard, particularly by the senior students.
Mr. Coney made his appearance in •• pianoforte duet with Miss Mary Johnston, “Romance with Variations (Greig), an enjoyable item which wa? popularly received, and in a piano e«o. “Two preludes,” by the English composer, Maurice Besly, in which a deligc - ful interpretation was provided.
