DAWN OF NEW ERA
industrial conference RESULTS AUCKLAND EMPLOYERS MEET Nearly 70 members of the Auckland Provincial Employers’ Association assembled in the Chamber of Commerce hall this afternoon for the luncheon and annual meeting. After the 27th annual report, already published-in THE SUN, had been read, the chairman,__Mr. A Spencer, president of the association, mo T ed its adoption. In seconding the motion. Air. J. S 3. Dawes, vice-president, paid a compliment to the chairman for his comprehensive address .'published in another column) and described the recent indust! ial conference in Wellington as the dawn of a new era. In his opinion the Arbitration Court liad been rather misused. It had been a wage-fixing tribunal that ha J set wages on too high a scale. Men had been put off by foreo of circumstances and had sought work on their own. The high wages enabled them to undercut union men, and thus many unions found themselves in a bad position. Mr.A. G. Dunn said that the high wages in secondary industries were reflected on primary industries, and the time had arrived when things had to oe brought back to their proper basis. The unemployment position was such that men could not be allowed to go on as they were going. The co-ordina-tion of the Government and public bodies had to be achieved to set various works on fact. The land problem was an immense one, btthere was a way out. He believed that Reform would still have been in power if they had possessed a satisfactory land policy. The following executive committee was re-elected: Messrs. Albert Spencer, J. S, Dawes, E. Alis-on, J. A. C. Allum, M. J. Bennett, T. H. Bowie, A. A. Brown, C. Campbell, C. W. Coles, A.‘ 11. Court, J. C. Craig, J. C. Entrican, C. F. Gardner, J. A. Graham,. Captain It. C. Hammond, Messrs. J. Hellaby, W. J. Jeggs, W. Y. Kirkman, G. F. Lane, Jas. Lowe, G. Mills - Palmer, A. W. Page, W. A. Phillips. C. Rhodes, T. Simson, A. Thompson, H. M. Warner, J. W. Wiseman, P. T. •Birch. The chairman advised that three new members would be elected at a later date. Messrs. J. F. Buddie and Son were reappointed auditors. A motion of thanks to the president was proposed by the Hon. E. W. Alison and carried with enthusiasm.
