HISTORIC CAPTURE’
DEATH OF CAPTAIN BURKE VON LUCKNER’S ESCAPE One of the exciting incidents of th© war, as far as Auckland was concerned, is recalled by the death yesterday of Captain William V. Burke. He was master pf the scow Moa, which, on December 13, 1917, was captured by Count Felix von Luckner and tho other Germans who escaped with him from MotuihL Captain Burke, who was bringing the Moa back from Omakaroa, was hailed by a launch off Mercury Bay. This launch was flying the New Zealand flag. As soon as the launch camo alongside Captain Burke and his men were overpowered by von Luckner and the other Germans, and informed that they were prisoners of war. Von Luckner ordered Captain Burko and his men to take tho scow lu tho Kermadecs. but the cable st* imer Iris overtook the fugitives and the exploit ended. After tho war Captain Burke received a personal photograph from von Luckner. The late captain was 69 years of age and resided at 6 Seymour Street, Ponsonby. For 50 years he traded along tho New Zealand coast. He was born in Galway, Ireland, but at an early age he went to Portland, Oregon. Later ho served in the United States Navy. Captain Burke married Miss Roasanna Cosgrave. daughter of one of the early settlers of Auckland.
