48 YEARS AROUND COAST
CHIEF ENGINEER RETIRES SERVICE WITH NORTHERN COMPANY With the completion of 48 years of service with the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd., in coastal vessels, Mr. S. J. W r eston, chief engineer of the Clansman, has retired. Joining the Northern Steamship Company in ISBO as second engineer of the old lona, Mr. Weston was soon promoted to the position of chief engineer. He served in the Ngapuhi, Wellington. Waiotahi, Glenelg, McGregor, Staffer, Douglas, Chelmsford, and Argyle, and for the past 29 years has been chief engineer on the Clansman. It was he who rushed the Clansman to the rescue of the passengers and crew of the Elingamite, which went down off the Three Kings over 20 years ago. He was also on the Clansman when she went to the rescue of the Wimmera, which was also sunk off the Three Kings. In his earlier days Mr. Weston was prominent in running circles, being a successful sprinter both as an amateur and as a professionaL
