MOVE TOWARD PEACE

WHAT MISSIONARIES CAN DO BIBLE SOCIETY’S WORK “The world’s greatest need to-day is God—the real God,” said Archbishop Averill, at the annual meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society in St. Sepulchre’s Parish Hall last evening. There was a great movement today toward peace, but the movement was hanging fire. The missionary was far more needed in the world to-day than the statesman. In fact, the missionary Was the greatest statesman. The Archbishop also spoke of the work of the Bible Society. The annual report showed that the parent society, during the year, had published a record number of 15 new versions, nine being for Africans, two for South Sea Islanders, and the remainder for Europeans. The number of translations issued by the society now totals 608, including the complete Bible in 145 forms of speech, the New Testament in 146 more, and at least one complete Book of Scripture in 317 others. The distribution of volumes for the year amounted to 3,936,714. Congratulations were offered to one collector who, in seven years, had collected over £I,OOO. The gross receipts amounted to £2.571, an increase on last year’s income. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the meeting passed a vote of thanks to the collectors.
