Obituary

MR. JOHN MAIN The death of Mr. John’Main, a wellknown Waikato farmer, at the age of 64 years, has occurred at Hamilton. Mr. Main was the fifth son of the late Mr. Ambrose Main, of Tamahere. He farmed successively at Tuhikaramea, Walton, Lichfield and finally at Tamahere. For the last few years he had lived in retirement at Hamilton. Mr. Main was unmarried. MR. G. H. SCARSE Principal of Gilby’s College, Christchurch, for over 18 years, Mr. George H. Scarse died in a private hospital in Auckland on Monday. For the last three years he had been living in retirement at Rotorua but rapidly failing health made it necessary for him to enter a hospital in Auckland. Educated at St. Mark’s College, London, Mr. Scarse took his Master of Arts degree at Louvain University, France. He was keenly interested in music and for a time was organist at Brompton Oratory, London. Later he | entered the service of the Education Department in Victoria where he was largely responsible in Ballarat for the ! beginning of Eisteddfods or musical and elocutionary competitions at which he was a prominent adjudicator. Many pupils who passed through his hands during his long term at Gilby’s College now hold responsible positions. He was associated with numerous private theatrical enterprises. Mr. Scarse is survived by his wife and one brother, who is the librarian at Birmingham Library. The funeral took place at Walkaraka Cemetery ■ yesterday. MRS. MARY DAVIES Mrs. Mary Davies, who died at her home in Great South Road yesterday, at the age of 77, was born in Glasgow', and came to Auckland in IS7O in the ship City of Auckland. The late Mr. Massey wasj. fellow-passenger. For Mrs. Davies was known in Auckland business circles. Her husband predeceased her three years ago, and she is survived by her son. Mr. H. W. Davies, of Great South Road, and two daughters, Mrs. T. A. Hurley, of Dominion Road, and Miss A. Davies, of Great South Road. MRS. ANNA PATON i € The death occurred last week of Mrs. Anna Paton, widow of the late r Mr. Thomas Paton, at her home, Eden I Hill, Epsom, at the age of 93. Mrs. t Paton had lived for many years in I v the Epsom district.
