AN EXCITING CHASE
TWO MEN BREAK GAOL Reed. Noon. MELBOURNE, To-day. Four shots were fired at a prisoner, J. Bailey, when he was attempting to escape from the Pentridge gaol. He was captured after an exciting chase. The prisoner cut through the bars of the window with a hack-saw, which he secreted in the cell. The warders heard the noise and an alarm was raised. Another prisoner, Leonard Cowley, tried to climb the wall, and was nearing the top when he fell and broke a bone in a foot.
