GUIDE T 0 FORM

RUNNING AT LEVIN HORSES WORTH WATCHING (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Monday. In a large measure the form at Levin on Saturday should be a guide to the racing which is to take place at Otaki on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. To a considerable extent the same horses will be racing at Otaki but one thing that might be upsetting is that the Levin events were run on a. course that is all on the turn. There is no doubt this was the cause of the defeat of several useful performers on Saturday. The hurdles fell to the old battler Sunart. who won the New Zealand Cup some years ago. Sunart did not jump at all badly, though by no means perfectly, and on the flat he was head and shoulders above everything else, with the result that he won • as he was °nly cantering alongside Star Shell for the last half-mile and , ? 1 ? ce safely over the last hurdle he lobbed away to score one of the softest victories imaginable. As a bit of weight should not stop him. he has only to keep sound and jump righ> l? b ® a winner of other events over the battens. As far as could be seen he pulled up well after his race. He was heavily bandaged. Another New Zealand Cup winner. Rouen, was never prominent, and did not hjt out at all well. Improved by the Race ♦ i,? tar Sh< v n lo °ked rather more round han usual, and he did not run along , f £ ont dUite SO easily as he has done nl th , e , past ‘ He lo °ked as if he would be all the better for the race. And coml so?n° lnS *° ~ ta ’ hiS tu ™ . °? tbe , beaten division. Kilia might do best later on. He was well back thr . OUKh th e race, but he finished on meely in fourth place. He jumped fairly well, and there are less hurfliflthings than that he Win win I hurdle race soon. af£r r r?,i OWl ;‘ er ° was chopped out soon after the start of the seven-furlong hack race he contested at Levin th» best was not seen of him. His showfi<Lld he enc °untered was c ? n siderably below his best, and it of°what b he d i iSCarde t aS an indication run h 3 capable of with a good Green Acre was unlucky in the same race as Rotowhero contested. She worked a way up close to the leaders wfv™ the straight was reached and looked to have enough in reserve to *r^ r ° U t eh in the stra »Sht, but when she was about to make her run she was shut in and held there till the race o'rw,™ icany ° ver - she should d© kept in view Shining star seems to have improved since last season. It will be rembered that he won a double in the one afternoon at the last meeting of the Manawatu Hunt Club. On Saturday he went really well in his race at Levin and he finished on strongly at the right end. Raced Well Borsalene surprised by the good race she ran in the Wereroa Hack Handicap. It was her first appearance for a considerable time, and she was not expected to show up. Her pace carried her to the front early in the race, and she stuck on till nearing home when her condition found her out and she dropped have been an encouraging run for her new owner, Mr. I’. Foley, in whose colours she was making her first appearance. For some time a certain section of

the regular followers of the game hast been waiting to back King Quex. Th v got their opportunity on Saturday but King Quex did not pull through. H ow ever, he was at such a good price on the machine that he paid a useful divi dend for running second. He h?d every opportunity to win had he been good enough, as he was out in front all the way and did not have to be bustled to get there—he drew the i n . side running in a race started on a turn —but Elysianor was far too good for him and collected him when he wanted to. In fact. King Quex had to be vigorously ridden with the stick in the last half-furlong to keep off Shining Star. Hymestrason has been racing over hurdles and fences of late and seems to have lost some of his pace. He did not show up as well as expected at Levin. Might Have Won One of the unlucky runners in the hack seven-furlong race at Levin was Bourse, and some of those who noticed her are of the opinion that with a good run she should have won. If that is correct, she will be heard from at Otaki. Topere was somewhat unlucky on the home turn in the Maiden Race and might have won instead of running second had fortune favoured him instead of favouring Thrift. He is bv Arrowsmith from Gazalie. and look* a fair sort. The Warplane—Beilina filly m j*. Tilly’s stable. Thrift, won her race at Levin in good style and will make her presence felt among the hacks for a while. She should be able to add to her prize money between now and the holidays. The Awapuni gelding Cold Air ran very badly on Saturday. He showed no pace in the early stages of his race, and was never dangerous. The Dove exhibited a nice turn of speed at Levin, but did not run on well and was overtaken in the straight by Argue and decisively beaten. The Dove is not a bad hack, and. well placed, will pick up a stake or two; but she is not likely to hold her own with the good ones. Holus Bolus did not find the Levin course to his liking and was in a bad position all the way in the race he contested. He should be able to go much nearer to showing his true form on the Otaki course. Much Improved Argue is very speedy, but cannot stay. He was not allowed to hurry to the front in his race at Levin on Saturday and the policy proved a wise one, as he had sufficient in reserve in the straight to comfortably beat the opposition. For five-furlong races there are few smarter hacks about and as on this occasion he ran out six furlongs, it is possible that he has improved. Moutoa Wonder, the pony who was taken to Sydney last winter, was seen out at Levein. He is in fair shape, and as he is to do the Christmas meetings he should not be lost sight of by patrons at the meetings in this end of the island. Australis showed speed in his race on Saturday' and will do better very shortly. Horomea had her chance in the Levin Cup ruined at the start. When the barrier rose she was not one of the first to move .and her.rider had to pull her in behind the field. With nineteen runners on a small course - she had no chance of getting out, and was hemmed in all the way. The Quarantine mare looks really well. Placed Right Teri ran a good race in the Levin Cup, but no excuse can be offered for his defeat as Wiggins had him beautifully placed all the way and then could not get him home first. Nevertheless Teri has only to retain his form to be a snag in some of the poor fields that will be competing for fair stakes in a few weeks’ time. Avro will be much harder to beat next time out. When he shook himself clear of the ruck, Talisker just bolted in at Levin He is much improved in appearance, and is going to be useful this season. As he won from near the bottom of the handicap, it can be presumed that he has not done winning yet. Orazone did not have any of the luck of the running in the early part of the Levin Cup, but she finished well over the last half-mile. Hawera toiit.say' she is sure to win one soon.

Kalos showed a return tc L forI ”. f > Levin and was not beaten b* nd in tjjie hack race run over a mi* a distance . ~,4 Tanagra is very well at P r ® sen T vin though he did not win by r much at he scored very easily and » el field rather cheaply in the ?a sc long. He will continue to run P* inently', with ordinary luck. .3 The biggest disappointment at l* was Helotis. who seemed to **“ things made to order for her. ‘ _ got away well in her race, hu very wide on the home turn and chance after that. It may' be r „ bered by those who were at tne lngton spring meeting that s a much the same thing when lean field of sprinters at Trentham. Callanmore was not far away finish of the open sprint race at and he will score again shortly. ofl Dobbin and Keddar are coming quickly, and will be all the best the racing they' had at Levin. g e Ridgemount is a smart sP rin . * for was fancied In the right s lU^f„i £ ?hing his race at Levin, and in second he returned a substan dend. He is sure to do well season. . TYea* The track was against Moutoa a U sury at Levin, but she won w il! that, and on a bigger course is & win again unless the comp y great deal stronger. k ra <* Flying Binge might win a nac* very shortly. ut Next time Lady Quex ste P s t gte should be very hard to beau was badly drawn at the barn n fast five-furlong race at Levin, bu onround the field all the way ana strated her speed. Her cha hopeless, but her day is near.
