and A. McMillan, the Tamahere mentor, scored a double with Daytime and Joy Bird. The saddle heat was the most popular of the day with speculators, and the investments in this event were far in excess of any other of the contests. POOR EXHIBITION OF TROTTING The opening contest was a poor affair. Colonel Thorpe (£479) was the favourite, with a little money also on hand for Royal Bob (£377), Great Way (£322), Direct Action (£269) and Gold Sovereign (£245). Great Way and Royal Bob went away badly, and later in the first circuit Colonel Thorpe and Direct Action also got up. Golden Huia % led away from Colonel Thorpe, Great Way, Direct Action. and Billy Carbine. At the end of the first circuit Direct Action was four lengths in front of Great Way, with another eight lengths back to Billy Carbine, Colonel Thorpe, Golden Huia and Gold Sovereign, who skipped here. Direct Action and Great Wav drew out along the back, but the former got up, to settle down quickly and lead into the straight rom Great Way, Golden Sovereign, and 3illy Carbine. Great Way got up tgain in the straight, and it was left to Gold Sovereign to push Direct Action to half a length. Billy Carbine was three lengths back third, and Great Way fourth. Royal Bob ind Golden Huia were some distance away. TRAVIS AXWORTHY A GOOD ONE A big field of 20 came out for the Mangere Handicap, and Travis Axworthy £927 was made a short order, with St. Bridget £584 and Trustworthy £494 the only others backed. It wasn’t a race, for the favourite hit the front inside a couple of furlongs and stayed there At the start Gold Circle and Nella Dillon failed to go off, Ursuline leading down the back from Lord Lu, Travis Axworthy, Halgana and Warplane. Travis Axworthy went to the front crossing the top and led past the stands clear of Halgana and Warplane, with St. Bridget, Trustworthy (off the
Peter Grattan, Profiteer, Red Star and Trustworthy. The winner’s price was short, but Horizon carried only £35 and paid well over a. score for second. HARD-FOUGHT FINISH All six acceptors started, and Free Advice £1,642 and Laplander £1,541 monopolised the betting, and they were all out to catch Gold Dial at the post, and just managed it. Lord Nepean was first out and he led past the stands the first time from Gold Dial, Laplander. Free Advice. Dick Dillon and Taipare! a dozen lengthr separating the field. Tlio order was much the same, with Taipare fifth, nine lengths separating: them. Taipare broke crossing the top and Gold Dial led to the straight from Laplander, Lord Nepean, Free Advice and Dick Dillon. Gold Dial. Free Advice and Laplander had a great tussle over the last 100 yards, Laplander gaining a half-head decision over Free Advice. with Gold Dial a neck away. There was five lengths back to Dick Dillon, with the other pair a long way back. After hearing evidence In an inquiry held into a complaint that Free Advice had been ihterfered with by Laplander, the stewards reversed the positions of the first two horsee, placing Free Advice first and Laplander second. The owner of Laplander immediately lodged a protest against this decision, and until this is settled all stake money and dividends are to be impounded. FAVOURITE FAILS BADLY Of the thirteen starters in the Stewards, best backed £1,797 was a hot favourite, best backed of the remainder being Derby Lynn £892, Gold Dial £545 and Daytime £4BO. Dad’s Hope led out of the straight from Admiral Lock, Alice Axworthy, Daytime and Derby Lynn, the favourite being slow to settle down. Along the back Derby Lynn took up the role of pacemaker, followed closelv by Daytime, Admiral Lock, Alice Axworthy, Van Rich, Firelight and Ribbonwood’s Last. There was a change three furlongs from home, Daytime -being the actual leader into the home stretch, followed closely by Van Rich, Firelight and Derby Lynn. Daytime held his own in the run to the post and won by three lengths from Van Rich, with Firelight a length and a-lialf back third. Ribbonwood’s Last and Derby Lynn were right up, and then came Anselm and Admiral Lock. Firelight did not appear to be driven right out, otherwise he would probably have been second. NGATI RA SCORES WELL Backers fell over themselves to b# on Raima in the trot, the chestnut being entrusted with £1,329, while there was fair support for Great Change £827, Ngatira £698 and Mutu £513. The Tartar failed to go off, and (Continued on next page.)
