CAVE-MAN METHOD
HUSBAND’S ATTACK MAN WHO BEFRIENDED WIFE At the Onehunga Police Court this morning a young married man, William Gordon Eraser, was charged with assaulting S. T. Baker, a carpenter, who was said to have been paying attention to Eraser’s wife. Fraser met Baker coming to work one morning and severely roughhandled him. Cross-examined by the defendant, Baker admitted having befriended Mrs. Eraser. He had taken her to Fullers’ and had assisted her with money. He had also taken her to live with a friend of his. He was a married man with one child. J. Parkinson said he saw Baker knocked down and kicked by Fraser. The attack took place in Angle Street, Onehunga. In evidence the defendant said that Baker had been working on a building opposite witness’s home, and when remonstrated with for giving money to Mrs. Fraser, said he would not give her more.
Cross-examined. Fraser denied ever having thrashed his wife, but admitted that she had taken proceedings against him for separation. She had a violent temper but he had never struck her. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, said that there had evidently been a conference between the defendant and Baker, and the atmosphere of the case did not suggest the action of a man who had suddenly discovered that his wife’s affections had been tampered with. Although there was no justification for the assault, he would merely convict the defendant and order him to pay costs.
