Yachting Season Opens
Keelers Race to Islington Bay Fewer Boats than Last Year THE Waitemata Harbour was in its most pleasant mood on Saturday afternoon, when the yacnting season in Auckland was officially opened. A steady nor’-east breeze made tlie boats move in fine style, and set against the green background of North Head their sails stood out in picturesque relief.
Arrangements were capably carried out by officials of the Auckland Yacht and Alotor-Boat Association, the controlling body of the sport. These were:—Starter, Mr. H. R. Arthur; assistant starter, Air. G. Alobberley; judge for the harbour races, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson; timekeepers. Messrs. A J. Collings and G. E. Laycock; judge, cruising races, Mr. E. J. Kelly; timekeeper, Air. W. D. Ross. Seven of the yacht and power-boat clubs took- part. Races were conducted for all classes of craft, from deep-keel boats to 12ft Gin Takapuna punts It was noticeable that the number of competitors in practically every class showed a decrease on last year’s entries. Some of the larger boats were not yet ready to take the water from winter quarters on account of the very wet spring. It was also noticed that a score of yachts, keelers and mullet boats had set off for a weekend cruise with no intention to race half an hour before the start of the A and B class keelers. The programme consisted of cruising races to Islington * Bay for keelers, mullet boats and launches. All open boats raced over a triangular course within harbour limits. Cruising Races A and B Classes. — The race for first and second-class keelers did not attract so big a field as in former years. Aloana was first away by a small margin, then came Kotiri, lorangi. Waione, Victory, Thelma, Ariki, NgaToa, Lady© Wilma, following in that formation, all within a few seconds of the leader. Rariri was lmin 15sec late and gave up at North Head. Rounding the head the order was: Ariki, lorangi, Aloana, Ngatoa, Victory, Thelma, Kotiri, Waione, Ladye Wilma and Rariri. The finishing times were: Ariki, 5.32.31; lorangi, 5.33.15; Ngatoa, 5.35.43 ; Victory, 5.40.47 , Aloana, 5.41.7 ; Ladye Wilma, 5.43.33; Thelma, 5.48.6; Kotiri, 5.52.45 ; Wione, 6.9.57. C and E Classes. — Only a small field turned out for the contest for third and fourth-class keel boats. The staxt was spiritless, though fairly close. Maybelle responded first to gun-fire, with Mahoe. Queenie and lona all hard by. The finishing times were: lona, 4.50.29 ; Queenie, 4.54.42 ; Alaybelle, 4.57.25 ; Mahoe, 5.4.43. H and I Classes. — Marere was in the best position and led away. Starlight was hard at heel. Celox came third and Starlock and Spray fourth and fifth respectively. All were in close array, except the last-named, which was 50sec after the gun. The finishing times were: Starlock, 4.51.17 , Celox, 4.56.34 ; Starlight, 4.58.35 ; Spray, 4.59.24 ; Alistletoe, 5.11.57. L and N Classes. — Keen as mustard, the 22ft and 20ft mullet-boats turned out in splendid style, no fewer than 15 lining up. A little too eager, three got over the line before the signal. One reerossed. Most skippers timed the gun very well and set off smartly. Lovelight and Huia were too soon, but did not come back. Marie returned and recrossed. Kokiri was actually first away, Mowai, Valeria, Matariki, Winifred and Wyoming were next. The finishing times were: Rakoa, 5.1.48; Kokiri, 5.3.35; Venus, 5.4.4; Valeria, 5.4.5 ; Winifred, 5.7.30 ; Marie, 5.7.38 , Lovelight, 5.8.0 ; Wairere, 5.11.50 ; Waima, 5.13.36; Rahiri, 5.14.10; Huia, ,5.15.30; Mowai, 5.18.17; Matariki, 5.20.5; Wyoming, 5.32.2. Kathryn R. was the leader, with Coquette, Irene, Wanderoo, «Tiger, Adelaide close in attendance. Helen C. was 35sec late and Maiebe 52sec late. The finishing times were: Maiebe, 3.38.30 ; Coquette, 3.44.0 ; Irene, 3.43.45 ; Kathryn R., 3.44.21 ; Adelaide, 3.50.20 ; Wanderoo, 3.50.35 ; Helen C., 4.9.25.
