MAORI LANDS

CONSOLIDATION WORK PROGRESS IN NORTH (Special to THE SUN) KAIKOHE, Saturday. The work of consolidating- native lands in the Bay of Islands district, which is being carried out by two commissioners, Messrs. W. Cooper and M. V. Bell, is now nearly completed. By this work Maoris, who hitherto have had their holdings in small blocks, scattered over large areas of land, now own one block of the same value as their former scattered pieces and it is expected that this consolidation, as well as the granting of £250,000 to the Native Lands Boards to finance improvements, will give a great impetus to dairying among the Maoris. Since Maori lands must pay their full share of rates after March, 1930, there will now be every inducement for the natives either to work their lands themselves or to let it to someone who will, and this should greatly benefit the whole of the North.
