TAHAROTO PARK OPEN
“FIRST OF A CHAIN” SPEAKERS AT TAKAPUNA “This is the first of what I trust will be a chain of similar parks distributed throughout the borough. With the rapid increase in population, it is the duty of the Bo,rough Council to provide ‘lungs’ for the people.” With these words, the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. W. Williamson, declared Taharoto Park open to the public on Saturday afternoon. A large number of people was present, and the slopes of the cricket ground within the vicinity of the temporary grandstand presented an animated scene. The Mayor was supported in his remarks by Mr. G. C. Malcolm, chairman of the Parks Committee, and Crs. A. M. Gould, F. Howes, Mr. A. Harris, M.P., the Hon. E. W, Alison, M.L.C,, and Mr. J. D. Bodle. Messrs. L. J. Minogue and E. Griffen replied on behalf of the Takapuna Cricket Club. Mr. Gould said that most of the credit for the acquiring of the area as a recreation reserve in 1924 was due to Mr. John Collins, who had been on the council for over ten years. The park had been purchased and was being developed entirely out of revenue. The cricket ground was the first portion undertaken, but the whole scheme provided for a full-size football field and for other forms of recreation. Afternoon tea was served. During the afternoon a junior cricket match, Takapuna v. City, was played. Veteran A. M. Howden delighted the crowd by knocking up 50.
