MAIN HIGHWAY WANTED WAITEMATA COUNCIL MEETS On the ground that the construction of the new air base at Hobsonville had caused a great increase in heavy traffic on the Hobsonville main road, the Waitemata County Council at its meeting yesterday decided to apply to the Main Highways Board to have this road declared a main highway. The sum of £4,396 vas received from the Main Highways Board to assist in the carrying-on of the Birkenhead-Albany Road, and £2,338 was received for maintenance work in the county. According to a report from the clerk, an area of 17 acres at Crown Hill, the Takapuna cemetery reserve, has been gazetted as the Waikiteroa cemetery, and the council lias been appointed trustees for its preservation. A report was received from the engineer, Mr. A. Murray, saying that parts of the Titirangi main road have been repaired, and that it will probably be safe for traffic for some months to come. Also, damage from storms on the Swanson-West Coast Road has been repaired, and the Taupaki-Kumeu highway has been rolled and graded over its whole length. During the month, 32 building permits, worth £6,706, were issued. The treasurer’s report showed that £1,397 in rates has been collected, arid that the balance on loan accounts is now £18.030.
