WORK OF A GENIUS—This is the famous Lightning, before a breeze, with everything drawing, including “stun sails." Designed by Donald McKay, of East Boston, who is now recognised as the greatest genius in ship-building the United States ever had, she was a remarkable wooden clipper. Twice she made 24-hour runs at an average of 18 knots, the day's work being 436 and 430 mil- s. An extreme example of "hollow lines,” she flew the Black Ball flag to Australia. She was burnt and scuttled after loading wool at Geelong in 1869.
