“ROAD HOUSE” Excellent screen entertainment and an introduction to two new screen players, was offered at the Eyrie Theatre last evening in their picture, “Road House.” Alba Maria and Warren Burke are the new stars and contributed toward a picture which is not only dramatic but thoroughly enjoyable. Lionel Barrymore is cast as the father of the boy, who sees disgrace fall upon his family and himself through his own indiscretion. In this part Barrymore, always the artist, gives one of his most human and sympathetic portrayals to the screen. Larry Grayson, the boy, falls in love with Sally Carroll, the bait of a gang of thieves. Through misunderstandings with his father Larry leaves home and goes to Sally. Sally persuades Larry to join the gang. This new association is halted by the spectacular killing of a road house proprietor, of which the boy is accused. The heights of drama are reached when the father is reconciled with the boy and stakes everything he has, his family honour and reputation, by standing by his son. “So This is Love,” which was also shown, has everything which goes to make up romance on the screen. *lt is delightful. Shirley Mason is *ne star. MUNICIPAL CHOIR The ' Municipal Choir, assisted by Miss Jean Allen, violinist, and Miss Amy Hansard, vocalist, will give a concert in the Town Hall to-night. , The programme will include choral works by Bach and Gounod, and folk-songs, violin works by Schubert, Paradis and Granados, songs by Banlock and Maughan Barnett, and organ works by Stanley and Schubert. Mr. Edgar Randal will act as choir organist and Mr. Leo Whittaker will accompany the vocalists. A RISING STAR Dorothy Boyd, an English screen star of fascinating appeal, has been given the leading role opposite Ivor Novello in Gainsborough’s new production, “If.” Miss Boj'd has had a wide experience of films in England and in U.S.A., and although only 20, has now been admitted to the ranks of the “great.” Impressing her directors greatly in her two previous Gainsborough productions, “Easy Virtue” and “The Constant Nymph,” she was offered the leading role in “If.” Graceful and beautiful and with a magnetic personality, Dorothy Boyd should make “the sky her limit.” Gainsborough productions are released throughout Mew Zealand by British Dominions Films. ORGAN RECITAL The city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, will give a recital in the Town Hall to-morrow (Sunday) evening, when he will play standard organ works by Bach" and Widor. Sterndale Bennetts’s Barcarole, Schubert’s Serenade, and the Prelude to Act 3, Lohengrin. NEW PARAMOUNT PICTURES Every department of the Paramount Hollywood studios is busy. In the cutting rooms are the Josef von Sternberg production, “The Docks of Mew York,” starring George Bancroft; “Take Me Home,” with Bebe Daniels in a new comedy characterisation; and Richard Dix’s “Moran of the Marines.” Five other pictures are scheduled for early starring dates and are in preparation. They are “The Case of Lene Smith.” “The Wolf of Wall Street.” a new Bebe Daniels vehicle, “The Tong War” and “Wolf Song.”
