WOOL SALES OPEN

late Commercial

hogget clips in demand FRENCH AND ENGLISH BUYING Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The first wool sale of the Dominion series opened in the Town Hall, before large benches of buyers. Owing to the somewhat wet weather, the catalogues were somewhat smaller than usual, 7,822 bales being offered as against 9,100 last year. Considering the present state of trade in the overseas consuming countries, the result came as rather a surprise, not only to brokers, but also to buyers, competition being keen in all grades. There was an exceptionally keen demand for hogget wools of preparing lengths, and also for hogget wool of 4$ to 50 quality suitable for the English trade. This was most strongly competed for, and at times noticeable French orders were in the market. American competition was lacking, no parcels of any weight being bought for the States. Medium crossbred of topmaking style sold well, the English trade buying by far the largest quantity. Competition for halfbreds can be reported as being fairly sound. The official range of prices for Merino tine halfbred super was from :ijd to 22 3d, with an average of 18id to 20Jd; medium halfbred, 19id to 20£d. average, 17id to 19Jd; inferior, Is*d to 16£d: extra fine crossbred super, I9d to 20d, average, 16d to 18*d; inferior, 14id to 15Jd.
