MANY CANDIDATES LOSE THEIR DEPOSIT
STATE BENEFITS BY £330 LABOUR PAYS £IOO Though the actual situation will not be known until all the votes are counted, it appears that the Treasury will benefit to the extent of £330 from 33 candidates who have so far forfeited their deposit of £lO each. The Legislature Act states that, unless an unsuccessful caf lidate polls one-fourth of the total number of votes of the successful candidate, he shall forfeit his deposit of £lO. which will be paid into the Consolidated Fund. Those who have forfeited their deposits on the present figures include 10 Labour, 5 Independent Government, - Government, 2 Liberal-Labour. 2 Treaty of Waitangi (Maori), 1 United Party, 1 Country Party, 1 Liberal and 1 Independent Labour candidate, 1 Christian-Socialist, and 7 Independents. The official count may exclude a tew, but the candidates affected are as follows:—J. Joiner and F. J. Lysnar (Auckland Central), P. B. Fitzherbert and Mrs. L. Paterson (Grey Lynn), O. K. Burton (Eden), R. E. Hornblow (Bay of Islands), A. H. Curtis (Marsden). M'. Brown (Raglan). S. E. Judd and A. G. Christopher (Rotorua), C. Croall (Waltomo), \V. G. Simpson (New Plymouth), J. Whittle (Pahiatua), F. Andrews (Rangitikei), H. .T. D. McManu(Manawatu), J. Purchase (Otaki), Mrs. M. Young (Wellington Central). J- J. Clarke (Wellington East), F. L. Turley (Hurunui), M. Williams and R. n. Wightman (Mid-Canterbury), W. A. McLachlan (Chalmers), G. S. Thomson (Dunedin North), G. Pulley »\\allace), W. M. C. Denham (Awar T^ a ). H. K. Waiaua. Hone Heke, R. Wi Rongi, Ramuho Maika and L. W. Parore (Northern Maori), T. P. Stewart (Eastern Maori), and W. T. Pitama *nd T. M. Erihana (Southern Maori). Several candidates forfeited their deposits by a few votes only. Nine fotes only were polled by Mr. L. W. f arore in the Northern Maori electorbut tiles€ were in error, as he Jithdrew from the contest a few days before the election. r - W. A. McLachlan, Independent government candidate for Dunedin took bottom place in the European poll, securing 37 votes only in a four-cornered contest.
