BRIGADE NOT SLOW

FIRE OFFICER’S DENIAL NEW SOUTH WALES BLAZE SYDNEY, Thursday. The eoronial inquiry into the fire at the Cumberland paper mill was resumed to-day. Samuel Fletcher, an officer of the fire brigade, denied the allegation made yesterday by Robert Bain, mill engineer, that the brigade was very slow in responding to the alarm and failed to take an engine right to the scene of the outbreak. Witness said an attempt was made to take an engine down the hill through some burning undergrowth to the mill, but the w*hole countryside was a blazing inferno. It was the hottest day of the year and the wind was fierce. It would have meant certain death to the brigadesmen. Consequently they concentrated their efforts upon saving the neighbouring cottages. Seven of these actually were saved from destruction. The inquiry was again adjourned.
