United has taken 15 seats in the: North and 11 in the South, and j Labour 10 and 9 respectively. In j the North Labour has increased its I majority by one seat and by four in the South. The following table show’s the position of the parties in the various provinces, the strength of the parties at the dissolution being shown in parentheses: —-

CITY VOTING in Auckland, United scored particularly well, United members being returned in five of the 10 seats. Labour winning four, while Waitemata is the only electorate to send back a Government member to the House. In both Wellington and j Christchurch, also, only one Govern- ! ment member has been successful, the Government candidate for another seat having a small lead. Labour captured three seats in Wellington and three in Christchurch. Dunedin has divided its allegiance equally between tbe Government and Labour, which each hold two seats, and Has returned no United supporter. It has been the only city to return aii Independent member, in this case, Sir Charles Statham. The main strongholds of Labour are still the four cities, which altogether returned 12 of the 19 Labour members. The West Coast and the larger towns like Napier provided the remaining successful candidates, Raglan and Waimarino being the only rural constituencies to prefer Labour representation.
