SLOW FIRE BRIGADE

CRITICISM IN N.S.W. SYDNEY, Wednesday. A coroner to-day opened an Inquiry into the fire in the Cumberland paper mills on October 7, which caused damage to the extent of £250,000. Robert Bain, mills engineer, stated in evidence that the fire brigade was very slow in responding to the alarm. It also failed to take a fire-engine right to the scene of the outbreak. Had that been done he was of the opinion that a considerable part of the machinery could have been saved. Cross-examined, witness said he had been threatened with arrest by a constable when he gave information about a previous mill fire in 1918. The inquiry was adjourned.
