GENERAL ASSEMBLY

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PARLIAMENT OPENING ON WEDNESDAY The general assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, which is to be held in Auckland, will commence next Wednesday evening, when the Right Rev. James Aitken, the retiring moderator, will preach at St. David’s Church, and the moderatorelect, the Right Rev. Professor William Hewitson, will deliver the inaugural address. The annual conference of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union will be held at the same time. The assembly is the annual parliament of the Presbyterian Church, and will be attended by over 250 delegates, representing practically every congregation throughout the Dominion. After the opening ceremony on Wednesday evening a Communion service will be held on Thursday morning, and the business of the assembly will carried on at morning, evening, and afternoon sesisons until finished. Among the subjects that will be discussed are the appointment of a professor of Hebrew at the Theological College, Dunedin, in succession t* Professor James Cumming, and tat appointment of a new master of Knox College to succeed Professor Hewitson, who has held the position ““p* it was created. The defining of the assembly’s attitude toward a joint peae* manifesto, issued in "Wellington some time ago, will be discussed also. Church reorganisation proposals tjiai are expected to effect an annual saving of £I,OOO to £1,200 will occupy attention.
