MINORITY IN HOUSE
LONG RECORD BROKEN For the first time in a quarter of a century the members returned to Parliament in the elections in the European electorates yesterday represent a minority of those who voted validly. If the split vote has played a part in New Zealand politics in the past, it has not prevented Parliament from reflecting a majority of the votes of the people. Official figures show that in every election from 1905 to 1925 the candidates returned to the House represented as a whole a majority of the votes cast at the particular elections. This, of course, reflects in no way th party voting, hut merelj shows that the people's choice of Us House of Representatives reached Parliament carrying more than half the votes east. It is noticeable that m 1925 the percentage of votes polled by successful candidates to the total votes cast beV-re 1905. In 1905 the percentage' was 55.-15: 1908. 36.84: 1911 55 28: 1914. 55.52: 1919, 51.47; and 1922. 51.09 Yesterday 685,272 valid vot-p were cast, and the members returned secured 341,653 of these In other words the new members represent only 49.85 per cent, of the electors who voted.
